Past▶▶Forward Ensemble

Founded by violinist and conductor Shunske Sato, the PastForward Ensemble seeks to bring music of the 19th century back to its emotion-based roots, to reawaken its sounds and its essence: immediate, wild, contemporary.

Its experienced, European-based musicians are passionate about the music of the Romantic era and, in particular, its historical performance practices whose creative and expressive goals fundamentally alter how the music is interpreted and experienced.

Born out of the desire to give this vision a lasting home, the PastForward Ensemble endeavors not merely to uphold Romantic music, but to rekindle its power and share it with today’s audiences.

Watch us

Our mission: we want to reinvent music... literally.

Music, unlike art forms that are created via an immutable medium - literature, painting, sculpture, architecture and so on - must be reinvented every time.

We sculpt time.

We believe music of the Romantic era needs some dedicated revisiting: we want to return it to its volatile, unfettered and subjective origins.

In the Ensemble are experienced, expressive and dedicated musicians.  We know a lot about music of the Romantic era, because we love it - and we want to share it with you.  We are soloists, teachers, members of prominent orchestras who, despite - and because of - our “usual” line of work, want to show you what this music is capable of.

Historical instruments and historical performances practices (i.e. instruments and aesthetics of the time and place of the composers) excites us, because it connects both player and listener to the very moments when the music was conceived.

The past becomes the present.  Pieces of music, created by real people with real lives and emotions, become relevant.  These people are not distant historical figures: they are you, they are us.

In an era of AI, uniformity, predictability and disconnect, we need humans, idiosyncrasy, nuance and genuineness, more than ever before.  We have our our honesty, music and story-telling; with these we want to involve you in making our world a bit better, one concert at a time.
